Cooking School

If you have always wanted to pursue a career in the culinary arts, you probably have considered attending cooking school, but were perhaps were unsure which one to choose. You don’t have to go to the most prestigious cooking school to find the courses in the area of culinary arts you wish to study.

However, if your dream is to work as a head chef in a fine restaurant, it is worthwhile to attend the best cooking school. Almost every cooking school offers courses in:

  • Baking
  • Sauces
  • Pastry
  • Desserts
  • International Cuisine
  • Wine

If you know that you want to attend cooking school, but you are not yet certain of which specialty to choose, it is a good idea to take a basic cooking course which will also serve as an introduction to other areas in the culinary arts. There are also brief, week-long courses that focus on certain areas.

Many people take the core courses at cooking school, and find that they want to focus on a certain area, such as pastry or wines, after completing their general degree.

Many courses at cooking school can be taken in a relatively short time, 6 months to one year. If you want to complete your course quickly, it is best to opt for full-time study, although there are also part-time courses available for those who need to continue working.

The classes are usually taken 5 days a week and involve lectures as well as practical classes. Students will watch the teacher demonstrate how something is made and then they will be given the opportunity to cook under the supervision of a director. Students may sometimes be asked to form a meal with other prospective chefs, or may work individually.

There is little textbook work, but some paper work and homework may be required. Those who attend cooking school also learn the principles of putting together a menu. For those who want to learn restaurant management at a cooking school, there are some lectures and text work involved. For practical courses, some students may be asked to watch demonstration videos in their spare time as well as attending practical classes.

“Fusion Cuisine” is a popular concept in the culinary world, and many cooking schools will offer full courses and mini-courses in particular styles of cooking, such as French, Japanese and Southwestern. Many people combine cultures in producing an original dish that appealing and unique.

Since international food is such an important component of today’s dining, there are many of these courses available to those who attend cooking school.

Many students in cooking school will be required to do an externship, or to work in a specific restaurant as part of their course. This practical experience will enable to student to gain experience in the actual work environment, and to adapt cooking skills learned in school to the fast-pace of a restaurant.

When a student completes his or her course at a cooking school, a written and practical exam will be required before he or she receives a degree. Once a student has graduated from cooking school, the job search can begin, and many will find it easier to land a job at a restaurant, for others, it takes time.

Many of those holding degrees from cooking school may want to take short-term courses to gain skills in a specific area, such as pastry or wines. It may be possible to take such courses part-time while still maintaining a regular work schedule. Others schedule these courses between jobs, or are given time off by a restaurant manager who would like to see the chef gain qualification in a certain area.
