Culinary Schools

For those who are born to cook and spent their early years clutching their mother’s apron strings to get a look at what kind of souffle she was making, culinary schools provide the opportunity to develop an interest in food into a profession.

Those who work as chefs find the work demanding and rewarding, and culinary schools can help one find a situation as well as train to become a chef. The best chefs do not always go to the best culinary schools, but it is a good idea to enroll in the best-quality program you can, since the food industry is growing, but at the same time, is still quite competitive.

Usually, the more elite the restaurant, the higher the chefs are paid, and the best culinary schools usually provide staff for these fine restaurants. Therefore, the money spent on programs at fine culinary schools usually pay off in the form of excellent job opportunities.

Those who attend culinary schools do not always become chefs. There are also programs for caterers, wine stewards, bakers and for current chefs who want to train to become instructors at culinary schools.

There are many areas of study available at culinary schools, including: -

Pastries

International Food

Wine

Sauces

Pastry chefs are in demand to create gorgeous and tasty desserts that are usually rolled around on elegant trolleys at the end of a fine dining experience. An artistic eye as well as a keen palette is usually required of a pastry chef who is often expected to come up with his or her own creations, as well as mastering pastry classics.

A popular concept in modern cuisine is “fusion cuisine” which involves a blending of different food styles (for example, Californian and French, Southwestern and Jamaican).

Therefore, many culinary schools have increased their emphasis on International and Ethnic food to allow chefs to accommodate the palettes of clientele who are used to exotic food and new creations. At culinary schools, students can choose to specialize in a certain style of cuisine, or to learn various techniques from around the world.

Wine is an essential accompaniment to a fine dining experience, and most culinary schools offer courses on wine in addition to their other offerings. Chefs need some knowledge of wine, but wine stewards require more thorough training, and there are usually courses available on several levels.

A good recipe usually requires a good sauce, and culinary schools often offer opportunities to specialize in making sauces. Many fine restaurants hire a sous chef, or a chef whose special job it is to invent new and interesting sauces.

The amount of time it takes to earn a degree in culinary schools varies according to the type of degree and the school. Most schools are full-time, but some offer part-time options for those who area already employed. Some culinary schools allow students to take a portion of the course online and a portion in the classroom setting.

Students are required to complete classroom and practical work. Half of the day is usually spent cooking, sometimes individually, in groups, or under the supervision of an instructor.

The final exam is partly written, but mainly dependent on cooking an entrée, a sauce or a pastry. Many graduates from culinary schools find the restaurants they worked for during their internships are open to hiring them full time or at least to recommend them highly to another restaurants.

Therefore, it is sometimes not difficult for a new graduate of culinary school to gain contacts for work while he or she is in school. These recommendations coupled with a high mark on the exam can enable recent graduates to be placed in the nation’s top restaurants.

Ballet School

Ballet is one of the most demanding and awarding disciplines in the arts, ballet school is usually not a temporary course taken in a few years, but encompasses a ballet dancer’s existence from an early age until the dancer begins to work professionally with a company.

Even after the dancer achieves professional status, it is likely that he or she will return to ballet school at some point, and many retired dancers often teach in a ballet school. Therefore, the best dancers spend a good deal of time in ballet school.

Ballet requires the physical stamina of the most strenuous types of athletics, and the classes taken in ballet school focus on physical conditioning as well as areas of dance theory and technique. Classical ballet school begins for most dancers at an early age, and usually lasts a minimum of eight years.

Many ballet schools, especially those located in major cities, are allied with a certain ballet company, and the school provides professional dancers for the company. Therefore, many dancers have a good reason to be confident upon acceptance to ballet school, but years of training and time will tell whether the dancer will make it professionally or not.

As depicted in films, the environment at ballet school tends to be fiercely competitive, since it isn’t enough for many students merely to appear with a company one day, but to become a principal dancer. However, many close friendships develop at ballet school, and most of the competition is of a friendly nature.

Students often develop a close relationship and an admiration from their instructor, who is often a famous dancer in the field with years of experience. Since classes are usually small at ballet school, the student has the opportunity to benefit from personal instruction on technique.

For those who want to learn classical ballet, the ballet schools focus on artistry, clean lines, musicality and coordination. Students usually begin ballet school at the age of 11 or younger, and this is one reason parents begin teaching their children ballet as tots.

To be accepted to ballet school, even at such a young age, a dancer needs to demonstrate that he or she already has mastered basic ballet techniques and to show that he or she has the talent to develop into an excellent professional dancer.

Subjects learned by dancers between the ages of 11 and 16 include: -

Character study

Contemporary Ballet

Gymnastics

Ethnic Styles

Repertoire

Solos

Pas de Deux

Dancing is not just performing steps and moves gracefully, but involves conveying a character, since ballet is a form of drama and storytelling, as well as a type of dance. Character study will help the young dancer to get inside his or her character’s skin and tell the character’s particular story through dance.

Gymnastics are required for increased coordination and physical stamina, and male dancers are expected to engage in physical training to build their upper body strength. Dancers are also taught to build their repertoire at Ballet Schools, and to dance solos and with other dancers.

The second level of ballet school begins at the age of 16 and is completed when the dancer is 18 or 19. Many of the courses are similar to those learned at the first level, but are taught more in depth to prepare the dancer for a career with a ballet company.

Performance is emphasized as the dancer reaches the end of his or her studies, and he or she may spend the final year participating in company performances.

Gaining acceptance at ballet school, the dancer must prepare an excellent audition. Many representatives from ballet schools travel to various cities to see dancers audition, but more often, dancers must travel to the auditions. Some ballet schools will accept a video taped auditions, whereas others prefer to see the dancer perform live.

Acting Schools

Many people decide to enroll in acting schools because they dream of an exciting career on the stage or the screen. Others decide to attend acting schools for the fun of it, or to develop an interesting hobby and to meet people.

There are many acting schools, particularly in New York and LA, dedicated to both the serious student and the casual theatre-fancier, although the schools are usually separate. A student can earn a BA in acting, an Associate in Arts or can opt just to take classes with no special degree. Many experienced actors return to acting schools to take refresher courses, to work again with a valued mentor or to teach.

Many classes in acting schools are taught by well known actors who have been on the stage and screen for decades. In fact, many actors attend certain acting schools specifically to have an opportunity of studying with a giant in the field.

While there are many specialized acting schools, many students decide to pursue their acting degree at colleges or universities. These are often under the heading of Theatre majors, for which students learn other skills associated with the craft, such as directing and costume design. Students at traditional colleges and universities often have to take distribution requirements, such as history, math, science, and English.

Many acting students prefer to pursue this route, because it will give them a well-rounded education, and something “to fall back on” until they can support themselves as actors. Still others prefer to enroll in schools that are specifically geared toward acting. These schools may focus on film or theatre technique, or both.

Acting schools may have varying approaches to the craft of acting, and the type of acting school a student chooses depends on which approach is more comfortable for him or for her.

Many acting schools teach acting theory, using texts and examples from great, classic performances. Others focus on hands-on learning and encourage the actor to work constantly on developing characters and roles.

The first approach is geared more toward students who are interested in an academic approach of learning by studying. The more hands-on approach is focused toward learning by doing. Which approach is best depends on the personality of the student.

Many actors talk about “method” acting, and seek out acting schools that teach the Method developed by Stanislavsky.

lthough the Method is not as popular now as it was a few decades ago, there are still who are fascinated with the extent to which actors who practice the Method attempt to get inside of their character’s skin by living the character’s life. For example, a teacher espousing the Method would suggest to an actor playing a character who is a short-order cook that he or she should get a job at a diner to see what the character’s life is like.

Other acting schools emphasize technique, and that one should use his or her voice and gestures to create the character. Most acting schools teaching theory falls somewhere between these two extremes, although it is possible to find acting schools that espouse Method or Technique.

For most acting schools, one is required to give an audition to gain acceptance. This audition is usually in the form of one or two monologues, lasting 2 to 4 minutes.

For a BA degree, the school will require other information, such as transcripts and recommendations. Acting schools who also welcome casual learners will require only that potential students sign up and register.

Since competition to get into acting school is sometimes fierce, students are encouraged to apply and audition for more than one acting school, balancing the risk between highly competitive schools and those who have more relaxed admissions standards.

Golf School

Learn from professionals and improve your game on vacation by enrolling in golf school. For those whose idea of going on vacation means spending most of the time on the golf course, golf school is an excellent choice to unwind and learn to play like a pro.

There are golf schools located in many places around the US and overseas, so if playing golf is not your spouse’s idea of a good time, you can go to your favorite resort and vacation spot and take golf courses while your spouse and kids swim, go shopping and check out the local sites.

There will also be enough time for you to enjoy other activities besides golf, since most sessions end in the early afternoon with ample time to explore, have a dinner in a restaurant and enjoy the city’s nightlife. A vacation golf school combines learning with relaxation, and there is likely a golf school located close to your current vacation spot.

A typical golf school has a faculty of those who have been playing the sport for decades and who currently compete professionally or are retired professional golf players.

Many of these golf professionals are not simply stellar players, but are chosen for their ability to instruct beginners and veteran players on golf technique. Golf teachers usually attend conferences on how to improve their teaching skills several times a year.

They may either be employed at a golf school on a full-time basis, or teach only in off-seasons. It is not uncommon for those attending golf school to end up learning one-on-one with their favorite golf professional (although Tiger Woods might be a long shot).

Every golf school has its particular teaching technique that sets it apart from other schools. At America’s Favorite Golf School, which has locations all over the United States, the preferred method of teaching is to use the “Dream Swing” technique.

This involves a professional teacher actually guiding the student’s body through an ideal swing. If this is practiced often enough, one’s “muscle memory” will bring the player back to this perfect swing, and it will eventually become second natures.

America’s Favorite Golf School claims that this technique will dramatically improve the game of an intermediate or an advanced player, and will cut down the beginner’s learning time by 50%.

The typical day at a golf school will begin fairly early and end by mid-afternoon. This is usually to avoid the hot temperatures of mid-day and to allow the student to enjoy other activities the city has to offer.

The morning may begin at 9 am and end at 3 p.m. and will include lessons in technique, such as learning a full swing, a short game, and how to deal with trouble shots. The student’s game might be videotaped an analyzed by experts to get an idea on where he or she needs to improve.

The advantage of taping the player over simply observing him or her is that the instructor may be too close to the player to observe every movement, and the video tape can be slowed down so the teacher can view every movement in detail.

After lessons are completed, the student can play with other players or one-on-one with the instructor.

Most schools over a fee for the entire course, which includes:

A certain number of nights’ accommodation

5 hours of instruction and playing a day

green and cart fees

unlimited number of golf balls

Some golf schools may offer more perks and some will offer less.

Most golf schools are co-educational, but there are some golf schools that are available for women only. Other golf schools are geared toward youth, and are more like camps than actual schools.

These involve a total immersion in the game, giving each young person a chance to learn the basics of technique, to play, and to hear encouraging lectures from successful professionals.

Driving School

There are many reasons one may want to attend driving school. A driving course is necessary to pass a driver’s test in order to obtain a license, and is a good idea for those who have difficulty driving or suffer from anxiety behind the wheel.

There are many kinds of driving schools which teach the following:

Basic Driving

Defensive Driving

Truck Driving

Racing

Bus Driving

For those who want to attend driving school as a first step to obtaining a driver’s license, one should keep in mind that one needs to pass an eyesight test, and a practical and written exam.

Many driving schools offer 8 hours or more worth of lectures, and one has to get a score of 90% or higher on the test in driving school before one is given a certificate. The lectures cover many areas, such as defensive driving (which includes the concept that a driver must always be on the lookout for other drivers and to try to anticipate what they might do).

There is usually a review of signs and signals, rules and regulations, and a guide of what to do in case of an emergency. Basic skills will be discussed in most lectures, but many of the skills are left to the practical part of the instruction.

Driving schools include practical instruction as well as lectures, since no one can develop good driving skills without practicing them behind the wheel. The driving instructor sits on the passenger’s side of the vehicle, and there is an extra brake available on the passenger’s side to use in case it is needed. The prospective driver is then taken on residential, city and highway drives and is taught the procedure for driving in each situation.

To maser highway driving, a student has to learn how to disembark from ramps and to change lanes effectively. Parking is an important part of any driving course, and many prospective drivers are expected to master special skills, such as parallel parking. Night driving is also something that is learned in driving schools, and some courses might require the student to drive with the instructor at night.

For those seeking certification to drive a truck or a bus, there are specialized driving schools that reward these degrees. The courses are usually intensive and short, sometimes around 4 weeks to complete a 160 hour course. Like any other driving school, these schools include both lectures and practical instruction in their courses, and degrees are rewarded after passing a written and a practical examination.

One who is successful at completing a truck driving course receives a CDL license and can begin work as a certified truck driver immediately. Financial aid is often given to students in need, or a student can continue working at his or her regular job while attending a part-time weekend course which usually takes around 8 weeks to finish.

Although truck and bus driving have been traditionally male professions, more women are becoming drivers, and driving schools today are forbidden from denying any student access to its courses on the basis of gender.

For those who are confident in their driving abilities, and who want to teach others how to drive, there are special courses available at driving schools to train driving instructors.

Practical and written training and tests are administers, and one will need flawless performance to instruct others in driving. Working as a driving instructor can be an enjoyable and profitable career, and many driving schools offer certification courses for those who want to be instructors. Since there will always be people who want to learn to drive and who need instructors, there is usually work available.

Graduate Schools

For those who have completed an undergraduate degree and to wish to continue their studies in a specialized field usually consider graduate schools as the next step in their path toward career or academic work. Many people who are successful in their fields have attended graduate schools, and an MA is fast becoming what a BA was only a generation ago.

Many businesses are looking for candidates with specialized degrees, and it is for this reason that graduate schools are becoming more popular for those who are finishing or have finished their undergraduate degree.

The main question that concerns the undergraduate is whether he or she should work for a year or go right into graduate school. It is true that admissions workers in graduate schools often look favorably on candidates who have had some work experience in their field, but this depends very much on the type of field one is entering.

Those with stellar academic records may choose instead to go straight into their graduate schools; they may also have an “it’s now or never” feeling that if they enter into the world of work, it will be difficult later to pursue their dreams and their degree.

However, there are undergraduates who are unsure of what kind of graduate school to attend. They may want to get an idea of what it is like to work in a certain field before applying to graduate schools.

There are many different types of graduate schools offering various degrees. The number of specialized, post-graduate degrees is increasing along with the demand of employees and students.

Popular courses at most graduate schools include:

Medicine

Law

Creative Writing

Journalism

Business

International Relations

Some undergraduates have a sense that they want or need to attend graduate school and are unsure of what kind of graduate school programs to pursue. A good way of helping to narrow down one’s choices is to go on a summer internship in an area of interest to see if it appeals.

There are many types of graduate schools to choose from, and attending an Ivy League graduate school is not necessary for finding the best degree. In fact, some Ivy League Universities are geared more toward the theoretical than the practical approach.

Someone whose goal is to excel in the world of work may want to consider a more practical kind of degree (although it is still true that a degree from a University, such as Harvard, will stand you in good stead).

It is a good idea to apply for a variety of graduate schools which have different levels of selectivity. Try applying for at least one “reach” school that you will be thrilled to get in to, but are not counting on acceptance.

Then try to apply to some medium level school and low risk options. By diversifying your application process, you can be assured that you will have a good selection of graduate schools to choose from before making your final decision.

Some students find the academic rigors of graduate programs to be more demanding than they were in undergraduate schools.

However, some students have an easier time at their graduate schools, since the lack of distribution requirements means more free time to pursue independent study. It is true that initiative and independent thinking is required of a graduate student, as well as self-discipline to schedule one’s time without the framework of regular lectures and activities.

Those who perform best in graduate schools are those who truly love their subject and enjoy learning as much as possible about their field. Many who are not interested in their course soon become “burned out”.

Therefore, before attending graduate school, it is important to ask yourself whether or not you can commit to learning your area of study in-depth and if it truly suits you.

Massage School

For those who aim to ease the aches and pains of today’s fast-paced life, massage school is a great way to earn a degree in less than a year and to learn how to help others by improving their health and sense of well being.

Massage therapists are more in demand these days, and many earn from $40 to $60 an hour. Many massage therapists work privately, running a practice from their homes or along with other medical professionals in a clinic. Other massage therapists are employed as staff in gyms, spas, resorts, and work in with orthopedic doctors, and chiropractors.

Massage therapists are in demand for sports medicine, especially for sports like football for which injuries are commonplace.

Those interested in becoming massage therapists can obtain their certification and complete classes at massage school relatively quickly. State registration usually takes 7 months and national registration can take a year to complete. Depending on how specialized the course is, it can last 300, 500 or 700 hours.

These classes can be taken full-time or in the evenings. Upon graduation, a massage therapist can be expected to make anywhere from $20,000 to $70,000 a year (over half of massage graduates make at least $30,000).

There are minimum requirements for applying to massage school, including:-

A high school degree or a GED

Completed application form

Interview

A record of good health

Many admissions officials at massage schools will perform a background check and will refuse to admit a student who has been convicted of a felony, such as assault or sexual offenses.

Some schools require an application processing fee and the payment of a portion of the tuition before beginning the course. Most students who fit the above requirements are admitted to massage school.

Usually the most basic course at massage school is around 300 hours and consists of 250 hours of classroom work and 50 hours spent on an internship at a clinic.

A typical course list includes:

Swedish Massage

Human Anatomy

Hydrotherapy

Human health and Hygiene

Business Practices and Ethics

Most Western massage techniques are based on Swedish massage, and it is the basis of coursework for most massage schools. Eastern methods can be learned as a specialty and it is possible to find a massage school that uses Eastern massage technique as a basis for its course.

Knowledge of human anatomy is essential for any massage therapist, and through study of the body, one can learn how to massage to improve health and a sense of well-being. Hydrotherapy is the science of using hot and cold water to create different physical effects that can heal and stimulate muscles.

This study is especially useful in sports medicine where ice packs alternate with hot wraps. The pores can be stimulated through hot and cold water treatments. Those who learn hydrotherapy are also taught how to apply herbal wraps and other body treatments.

Since massage therapist work with a number of clients a day, it is important that every student in massage school learns how to disinfect the work area and to prevent the spread of germs, therefore, students are required to take classes in Health and Hygiene.

Many massage therapists go into private practice, and the business ethics and practices course is intended to give the graduate from massage school all the information he or she needs to know about taxes, marketing and running a clinic.

Upon completing a course at massage school, the student is given a practical exam to ensure that he or she has mastered basic concepts and techniques. Once he or she is certified by the State and nationally, the graduate can begin to work as a massage therapist.

Technical schools, unlike traditional colleges and universities, allow a student to focus only on the courses he or she needs to take for his degree in a relatively short amount of time.

Technical schools are designed for the career-oriented student who may be working already and who may want to supplement his or her knowledge and skills in the field, or those who are not yet working, but have a very concrete idea of what they want to do for a living.

Technical schools often offer a wide variety of degrees and courses, and these courses vary in length depending on the type of degree rewarded. For those who want to complete a degree or a certificate program in a relatively short amount of time while working or taking care of family obligations, technical schools are the right way to go.

Technical schools usually reward degrees, certificates and diplomas, depending on how in-depth the course is. There are almost as many offerings at technical schools as there are professions.

Some of the most popular areas of study at technical schools include:

Interior Design

Medical Technology and Assistance

Computer Technology

Graphic Design

Plumbing and Electrical Repair

Culinary Arts

Many of the courses require classroom lectures and homework as well as hands-on training involving demonstrations of certain procedures. The courses vary in length and number of hours, but many can be taken during the day or after work evenings and weekends.

Courses are available at many levels, and some find that after they are awarded their first degree that they want to continue learning at technical schools to obtain an advanced degree or to take refresher courses if they have been out of the work force for a while.

One of the main advantages to going to technical schools is that the focus is entirely on education and training. There are no distribution requirements, and a student can choose to learn his or her profession without other distractions and activities. This is an advantage for those who want to save money and time and want to enter immediately on the career track.

Many of students at technical schools already have work and family responsibilities. The advantage of technical schools is that they do not require students to put their lives on hold, but many students attend technical schools part-time. There are a growing number of technical schools that offer online options in which a student can take a portion or all of a course online.

With classes like accounting, it may be possible to take the course almost entirely at home in front of the computer. More practical courses like culinary arts, plumbing and medical technology may have a component of the course available on disks or on the net, but the student will be required to attend practical classes and demonstrations.

Despite the fact the technical schools are relatively inexpensive and offer courses that can be taken while working, many students require some kind of financial aid. There are scholarships available at technical schools to help defray the costs of learning, and some offer on-campus Work study programs.

Private and federal loans are also an option, and many graduates from technical schools find that they can pay off the loans in a relatively short amount of time. Federal student loans have very low rates of interest and have long periods required before all payments are due.

However you are planning to finance your education at a technical school, the increase in income after graduation will make your degree well worth the costs of your education.

Nursery School

If you have been a stay-at-home parent of a young child, and you are thinking of returning to work or simply want some time to yourself, it might be a good idea to enroll your child in a nursery school. Of course, your child should also be ready to go to nursery school, and it is important to decide whether or not your child is actually ready.

In general, an ideal time for nursery schools is when a child is no longer in diapers, is able to communicate, and seeks friendships with other children, usually around the age of 2 or 3. However, because of necessity or desire, many children are placed in nursery school much earlier, and benefit from the experience.

It is a good idea to select a nursery school that is geared toward your child’s age group and skills. It is possible to enroll your child in nursery school part-time or full-time, and prices usually vary according to how much time the child spends in nursery school per day.

It is a good idea to evaluate the nursery school to see if it is really right for your child. Some parents end up sending each child to a different nursery school, since one school might suit one child and not another. A recommendation is usually the best way to find a good nursery school.

Many places offer introduction sessions for parents and give the child a trial period to see whether or not he or she will adjust to the school.

The first thing worth observing in a nursery school is the staff. Is there an optimal teacher student ratio (usually, there should not be more than 5 children per teacher)? The teachers should be qualified and registered. There may be assistant teachers who do not yet have certification and may be in the training process.

If this is the case, there should always be a certified teacher observing the student, and the student should not be left alone with the children. Although you cannot always be there to see to it that this is being done at the nursery school, you can ask the teachers questions and get a sense of their seriousness.

You will want to get an idea of the daily routine of the school. Children usually function well in warm and structured environment. The teacher should greet the children cheerfully in the morning and hang up their coats and bags.

There should be a special place for your child’s coat and bag, and, in general, the school should be well-organized. Most children have their own cups to sip from, and these should be located in a designated place. The schools should be bright and cheerful and should be quite clean.

If your child will be eating breakfast or lunch at the nursery school, there will be a kitchen. Ensure that the kitchen is clean and child proof. The outdoor play area should also be safe and there should be no holes in the surrounding fence.

A typical schedule at a nursery includes such activities as:-

Stories

Songs

Dancing

Arts and crafts

Play outside

Meals and snacks

The teacher should be able to tell you the daily routine. Typically, there is singing or story time in the morning, craft time, physical activity indoors or outdoors, a snack or lunch, and naptime. Many parents take their children to nursery school in the morning, and they go home for lunch and naptime.

Many nursery schools are actually pre-schools, and children learn the basics of the alphabet, phonics, counting, shapes and colors. This will give each child a head start and many children leave nursery schools ready to learn how to read and do simple math.

Language School

Language school is the best option for those who want to learn a new language or to take a refresher course in a language they might have learned in high school.

There are many well-established language schools around the world, and you can find intensive courses, night courses, and total immersion programs in the country of your choice.

Going to language school is a better option than learning at home with books and tapes, because receiving instruction from a native speaker, face to face, is a more effective method of learning a language than learning prepared words and phrases. Good language courses will encourage you to create your own dialogue and to learn to express yourself in the language you wish to learn.

There are many reasons a person may want to attend language school., and learning a language is a useful for:

Travel

Business

School

Pleasure

You can easily find intensive classes for business, which are useful if, for example, you are being relocated in a certain country. Many of these courses allow you to obtain basic proficiency in a language after a few weeks or months of study, but real fluency comes with actually living in the country or interacting with the natives.

One advantage of going to language school rather than learning on your own, is that you can practice speaking the language with your classmates outside of class.

Many language schools have language labs that are available for students to use almost any time. These language labs usually contain tapes, books, magazines and newspapers, and you can get extra practice through using these materials.

If you have some time on your hands, and want to obtain maximum proficiency in the language of your choice, it is a good idea to investigate total immersion courses that are available in many countries. Many of these schools have dormitories or placement with families. Through these programs, you will be able actually live in the language while you are dwelling in the country.

The classes are conducted entirely in the language and cultural events are usually included in the program, such as trips, weekend excursions and festivals. Many of these programs last from a 4 to 6 weeks, and are usually available over the summer, but some programs are open several times a year.

These programs are ideal for students or a teachers, who have a long summer breaks. Since businesses are looking more toward international commerce, it is possible that a company will offer a leave of absence to an employee who wishes to add another language to his or her skills.

For those who are taking day or evening courses at a language school, there are usually placement exams offered before the course begins. These tests are designed to determine the student’s skill level, and whether he or she should attend beginning, intermediate or advanced courses.

Placement exams may be oral or written, but are usually a combination of both. Once you are placed in a course in language school, you can expect to do a large portion of your learning in the classroom, but for learning a language, a lot of practice is required, so you will also do a substantial amount of work outside of the classroom.

Textbooks are used, but many language teachers encourage their students to watch films to read newspapers, magazines, books and other materials written or produced in the language. The more interaction one has with a language, the easier it will be to learn, so coursework in language school is only one part of learning a language.
